The number one complaint I’ve seen when only adding everyone to the _lpadmin group is that the Printers & Scanners Preference Pane is still locked, which, at a glance, leaves some standard users thinking they still do not have access. I hope to point out the flaws in this solution and hopefully offer better solutions. While this shotgun approach works, it’s not without issues. One of the most common solutions to this that I have found is to add the everyone group to the _lpadmin group, like so:

Option One: add everyone to _lpadmin (effective, but sloppy) Another example could be a SOHO customer who you do not wish to have full Admin to their machine, but you want them to be able to add the office’s printer(s) to their system without your help. One example could be when the users have the ability to take their managed Mac home and they wish to connect their home printer to macOS, but do not have Admin rights on their system. After doing this enough times over the years, I’ve finally decided to investigate what I could do allow non-admins to manage their own printer queues without needing to give them full administrator accounts.Īllowing users to manage their own printer queues is helpful for many reasons and in many scenarios. The result would require someone with administrative credentials to the computer to authenticate and resume the printer queue. This usually happened if the print queue was pointing to a shared network printer that experienced some issues when a user tried to print.

I’m sure we have all experienced printer queues “randomly” becoming paused and not allowing non-admin users to resume the queues. So, why not reduce the number of tickets we get about printer queues and make all of our days better? It’s no surprise then that when we receive tickets about printer queue issues, we open them with slightly more dread than some of our other tickets.

If IT had it their way, they would force everyone to “print digitally” to a PDF and forms would be filled out and submitted electronically (and don’t get me started on the users the print the form out, only to fill it out and then scan it to email…). Let’s face it, we can all agree that we hate printers.
